Artists Comment; While doing my genealogical research I found my Great-Great-----Aunt, Rachael, daughter of William Skinner. She was born around 1583 in England. I found a legal document accusing the local shoe makers wife of witch craft. according to it, she cast a spell on Rachael. It is my guess the so called witch was probably a lady that would listen to Rachael's problems and maybe give her some advice. Then as it is now, most of these problems center around self esteem and sexuality. In the closed minded society that existed at that time any advice that advocated freedom of thinking or action was not tolerated, especially by a woman. Anything that did not fit in with the church and social correctness was blamed on witch craft. I think she marched to the beat of a different drummer. I would like to have known her. She was on my mind when I started this picture, and in my mindless ness state, Rachael begin to manifest herself. I think about this picture a lot and wonder if there was really some non-verbal communication between us.
This piece, like many of my pictures, uses different colors from each direction to describe form.
