Distant Trees

Acrylic (24 X 32) Inches

Artists Comment:
This painting is a Minimalist treatment of trees in landscape. The background of this picture is prepared using plaster on MDO board. I use colors I like and ignore local colors. That is why you see lollipop trees of bright red juxtaposed next to bright green and blue trees. I have no interest in trying to duplicate actual colors of anything. That is called the "Expressive use of Color". In my paintings you will see red, green, blue people and landscape features. I could have spent hours painting the branches, trunks, leaves of the trees, but the lollipop trees very effectively conveys the message "I am a tree". Additionally, the oddball color of the trees has a definite emotional appeal that the photo-realistic depiction lacks. As with all Minimalist paintings, less is more!

Detail of Above Picture

I like to juxtapose high chroma colors against each other. I particularly like to place high chroma blue next to high chroma green. This particular combination "sings". Try getting that effect with a local green tree against a local green grass or blue sky. That is why I would rather not use local color. I also like to place contrasting colors close, but not too close, to each other. The detail again shows the turbulent make-up of the background.
